Production Note - Limited Series

Production Type: Limited Series

Death by Lightning is a standalone Limited Series designed as a completed, finite historical narrative. The production is an intensive dramatization of the 1881 assassination of U.S. President James A. Garfield, based on the historical account by Candice Millard titled Destiny of the Republic. By focusing on the specific political climate of the Gilded Age and the psychological profile of assassin Charles Guiteau, the series was structured to deliver a comprehensive look at a singular event. This format allowed the creators to utilize a high-profile cast including Michael Shannon and Matthew Macfadyen to tell a story that concludes naturally with the historical resolution of the presidency.

The decision to produce the story as a limited series reflects the definitive nature of its subject matter, which does not lend itself to multi-season expansion. With a creative team including Mike Makowsky and executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the project was designed to exhaust its narrative source material within its initial run. This ensures the production remains a focused historical artifact, providing a complete and contained exploration of the tragic intersection between two very different men in American history.

Production Trivia: Based on the book Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard. Produced by Netflix. Created by Mike Makowsky. Executive produced by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Starring Michael Shannon as James A. Garfield, Matthew Macfadyen as Charles Guiteau, Nick Offerman as Chester A. Arthur, and Betty Gilpin as Lucretia Garfield. Directed by Matt Ross.

Frequently Asked Questions

Death by Lightning is a standalone limited series, which means there will not be a second season. The narrative is designed to conclude fully with the historical events surrounding President Garfield's life and death. The only way the show would continue is if it were transitioned into an anthology format featuring a completely different historical subject.

The series is based on the true story of James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States. It specifically adapts the acclaimed non-fiction book titled Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard. The plot follows the real-life political rise of Garfield and the tragic obsession of his assassin, Charles Guiteau.

Principal photography for the series took place primarily in Budapest, Hungary. This location was selected because its well-preserved historic architecture could effectively double for 19th-century Washington, D.C. The production utilized various local landmarks and specialized studio spaces to recreate the American Gilded Age.

There are a total of eight episodes in this complete limited series. Because it is a miniseries, the entire story is told within these eight installments without any plans for future seasons. Viewers can experience the full historical arc from beginning to end in this single-season format.

The series stars Michael Shannon as President James A. Garfield and Matthew Macfadyen as Charles Guiteau. They are joined by other notable actors including Nick Offerman as Chester A. Arthur and Betty Gilpin as Lucretia Garfield. This ensemble cast portrays the real figures involved in one of the most significant political dramas in American history.

Death by Lightning is an adaptation of Candice Millard's historical book rather than an original fictional script. While the dialogue is written for the screen by Mike Makowsky, the events and characters are grounded in meticulous historical records. The series aims to provide a dramatized but accurate look at the medical and political atmosphere of the 1880s.
