Frequently Asked Questions
The series ended because creator Jim Davis felt the show had reached its natural conclusion after a long and successful run. It was not canceled due to low ratings, as it remained a top-performing program for CBS throughout its entire broadcast history.
There are a total of seven seasons consisting of 121 half-hour episodes that aired between 1988 and 1994. Each episode typically features two segments focused on Garfield and one segment featuring the characters from U.S. Acres.
While there are no direct spin-offs, the show itself was a hybrid series that included the U.S. Acres segments, known internationally as Orson's Farm. Later productions like The Garfield Show and Garfield Originals are separate franchise entries rather than direct narrative spin-offs of the 1988 series.
There are no plans for a direct revival of the original 1988 series, but Nickelodeon is currently developing a brand-new animated Garfield show. This project follows Viacom's acquisition of Paws, Inc. and aims to reintroduce the characters to a modern audience with a fresh creative direction.
Lorenzo Music provided the iconic, deadpan voice of Garfield for the entire duration of the series. His performance is widely considered the definitive portrayal of the character, though other actors took over the role in later movies and shows following his death.
The U.S. Acres segments ceased production alongside the Garfield segments when the show concluded in 1994. Unlike Garfield, these characters have not seen a major television revival, though they remain a nostalgic part of the original series legacy for longtime fans.
