Stateless is a standalone limited series that concluded its 6-episode run in April 2020. The production was a high-profile collaboration between Matchbox Pictures and Dirty Films, designed to provide a multi-perspective look at the Australian mandatory detention system. Inspired by the true story of Cornelia Rau, the narrative was structured to follow four specific characters whose lives intersect within the Barton Immigration Detention Centre. By framing the series around these distinct but interconnected arcs, the creators intended to offer a complete examination of human rights and bureaucratic failure rather than an ongoing procedural drama.

The series utilized a significant budget and an ensemble cast of international stars to bring attention to its heavy subject matter.
