Frequently Asked Questions
No, there will not be a Season 2 because the project was designed as a finite adaptation of its source novel series. However, its story and timeline are directly followed by the theatrical anime film Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative, which continues the narrative arc of the Universal Century.
Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn is based on a Japanese light novel series written by Harutoshi Fukui, with character and mechanical designs by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and Hajime Katoki. The original novel was serialized across ten volumes between 2006 and 2009 before being adapted into animation.
The original theatrical and home video OVA release consists of seven episodes released between 2010 and 2014. It was later reedited into a 22-episode television broadcast titled Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096 in 2016, though the story content remains essentially the same.
As an animated production, it was created at Sunrise Studios in Tokyo, Japan, rather than shot on physical filming locations. The project was helmed by director Kazuhiro Furuhashi and animated primarily by Sunrise Studio 1.
The musical score was composed by Hiroyuki Sawano. The soundtrack received widespread critical acclaim and remains one of the most prominent musical works across the entire Gundam franchise.
The series takes place in Universal Century 0096, precisely three years after the events of the film Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack. It bridges the gap between earlier classic Universal Century conflicts and later installments like Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative and Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway.
