Gunpowder is a standalone limited series that concluded its 3-episode run in November 2017. This historical drama was meticulously crafted to chronicle the specific events of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, focusing on Robert Catesby rather than the more commonly known Guy Fawkes. The production emphasized high-caliber period authenticity, utilizing detailed set designs and visceral depictions of Jacobean England to immerse viewers in the religious tensions of the era. Because the narrative is rooted in a specific historical event with a well-documented climax, the series was developed from the outset as a self-contained story without the intention for additional seasons.

Kit Harington, who also served as an executive producer, sought to bring a more personal perspective to the story given his own ancestral connection to Catesby. The three-part structure allowed the creative team to maintain a tight, cinematic pace that focused on the planning, the betrayal, and the ultimate failure of the conspiracy.
