Production Note - Limited Series

Barkskins is a standalone Limited Series that concluded its 8-episode run in June 2020. The production was an ambitious historical epic for National Geographic that required extensive location filming in Quebec to authentically capture the harsh environment of 17th-century New France. By adapting the initial sections of Annie Proulx's massive novel, the creators focused on a high-stakes period of colonial history, utilizing elaborate costume design and period-accurate sets to establish a grounded and gritty atmosphere.

The series was structured to deliver a self-contained narrative experience that explored the intersections of survival, commerce, and violence in the North American wilderness. Although the original book covers three hundred years, the television adaptation was crafted to provide a definitive resolution for its specific cast of characters within its eight-hour runtime. This focused approach allowed the story to function as a complete historical portrait, fulfilling its purpose as a prestigious limited event without the need for additional installments.
