Based on the sprawling ecological thriller novel by Frank Schatzing, the production was conceived as a high-budget international event to depict the catastrophic collision between humanity and a sentient deep-sea intelligence. The scale of the project required a massive collaborative effort across multiple European and global broadcasters, ensuring the narrative arc remained focused on the singular, global crisis presented in the source material.

The decision to frame the story as a finite run was driven by the specific structural requirements of adapting a dense, scientifically grounded novel into a cohesive visual experience. By maintaining a fixed endpoint, the creators were able to invest heavily in underwater visual effects and a diverse international cast while providing a definitive resolution to the existential threat posed by the Yrr. This approach preserved the integrity of the original literary message regarding environmental stewardship and the limits of human knowledge.
