Series Deep Dive:

Co-creators Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane re-engineer a familiar premise into an incisive examination of modern partnership. Anchored by phenomenal chemistry between Glover and Maya Erskine, Mr. & Mrs. Smith blends high-stakes operational thrills with the quiet anxieties of cohabitation. The series abandons glossy action tropes for grounded character work, delivering a sophisticated spy thriller that doubles as an authentic portrait of marriage under pressure on Prime Video.

Amazon Prime Video officially renewed the series for a second season in May 2024. Despite facing an indefinite delay in late 2025, the studio confirmed the show is moving forward with new showrunner Anna Ouyang Moench. The upcoming season will feature a mix of returning stars and new leads taking on the Smith aliases.

As of April 2026, the second season of the series is officially in the filming stage. Production relocated from New York to Los Angeles to take advantage of California tax credits. Filming is expected to continue throughout the summer before moving into the post-production phase.

The extended hiatus is primarily due to behind-the-scenes changes, including original co-creator Francesca Sloane exiting the series for an HBO deal. Scheduling conflicts also caused significant delays, leading to actress Sophie Thatcher dropping out and being replaced by Talia Ryder. Additionally, relocating the entire production to Los Angeles required extensive logistical restructuring before cameras could roll.

There are currently no official spin-offs in development for the series at Amazon MGM Studios. The show itself operates as a reimagined television reboot of the 2005 feature film of the same name. Amazon is currently focusing entirely on expanding the main series as an anthology style narrative with rotating lead actors.

Mark Eydelshteyn and Talia Ryder have been cast as a younger John and Jane Smith for the second season. Ryder stepped into the role after scheduling conflicts forced Sophie Thatcher to exit the project earlier this year. They will take on the dangerous espionage missions while expanding the wider universe of the mysterious spy agency.

Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are confirmed to return for the second season, though the exact capacity of their on-screen roles remains undisclosed. Both actors will also continue to serve as executive producers for the television series. The new episodes are expected to address the massive cliffhanger shootout from the first season finale.
