Production Note - Limited Series

Expats is a standalone limited series that concluded its 6-episode run in February 2024. Directed and showrun by Lulu Wang, the production was designed as a high-prestige adaptation of Janice Y. K. Lee’s novel, The Expatriates. The project was filmed with a cinematic scale in Hong Kong, utilizing a significant budget to explore the intersectional lives of three American women against the backdrop of the 2014 Umbrella Movement. Because the narrative was meticulously mapped to the emotional arc of the source material, the production was intended to be a singular, complete experience rather than a multi-season procedural.

The series is defined by its definitive exploration of grief, privilege, and motherhood, culminating in a finale that provides thematic closure for its central characters. By dedicating an entire feature-length episode to the perspectives of domestic workers, the production signaled its intent to serve as a comprehensive social critique rather than an open-ended drama. With the central mystery of a missing child serving as a catalyst for internal resolution rather than a cliffhanger, the creators solidified the show as a finite artistic statement that concludes the story of these specific expatriates.
