Expats

Expats is a standalone Limited Series designed as a completed, finite historical narrative. Created and directed by Lulu Wang, the production was conceived as a comprehensive adaptation of Janice Y. K. Lee's novel The Expatriates. The narrative explores the interconnected lives of three American women living in Hong Kong following a sudden family tragedy, utilizing a non-linear structure to provide a closed-ended examination of grief, privilege, and resilience.

The production scale involved extensive location filming in Hong Kong to capture the specific atmosphere of the 2014 Umbrella Movement and the unique socio-economic tensions of the expatriate community. Because the series was built around a specific emotional mystery and the resolution of its characters' internal conflicts, the story reaches a natural thematic conclusion that aligns with its literary source material. There were no plans for a continuation, as the creative team focused on delivering a singular, high-quality cinematic experience that functions as a complete work of television.
